Nags
Head Woods Ecological Preserve is
considered one of the best remaining
examples of a mid-Atlantic maritime forest
with deciduous hardwoods. This pine and
hardwood forest harbors trees up to 500
years old. The preserve is an
important nesting area for more than 50
species of birds. An extensive marsh
system bordering Roanoke Sound on the
western side of the preserve supports a
wealth of wildlife including river otter,
egrets, herons, and many species of
migratory waterfowl.
Nature expert Aaron McCall, Northeast
Regional Steward for
The Nature Conservancy,
will guide walkers on an hour and a half
walk on some of the walking trails in Nags
Head Woods.
Meet at The Nature Conservancy Visitors'
Center. Turn west off
Highway 158 onto Ocean
Acres Drive near Milepost 9.5. Drive
through a residential subdivision for a mile
until you reach the visitors' center.
Hiking boots or tennis shoes are recommended.
